// TamikrestAratan N Tinariwen
When you see Tamashek (Touareg) language written down, it looks like a beautiful, graphic code from the future. It’s ancient of course, and Tamikrest use it with urgency to speak to the young generation on their assured second album Toumastin. The lyrics (gracefully translated by Andy Morgan) call for unity among a people facing uncertain times ahead. They are also love songs and ‘Aratan N Tinariwen’, the track featured on this video, is an ode to the vast desert, a place so spiritually liberating that it has inspired Touareg culture for centuries. Growing up listening to Dire Straits and Bob Marley cassettes, as well as traditional Touareg music and of course, Tinariwen, Tamikrest’s desert rock swirls way up to the horizon and beyond.
